HW Brewer

HW Brewer was renowned for producing a series of Bird’s-Eye Views of English cities and places of interest and this one is of Portsmouth Harbour. It’s full of detail and a real snap-shot of the time; late 1800’s. The Semaphore Tower and railway line going right to the Dockyard (construction began in 1843) are clearly seen as is Portsmouth Cathedral. The harbour itself is a hive of activity with HMS Victory (not yet in dry dock) surrounded by many other smaller vessels. On the right is Gosport and beyond, in the distance, the Isle of Wight. This is a giclée print taken from an original etching of a Bird’s-Eye View of Portsmouth Harbour.
